“Abbotsford” derives from the name of the estate of Scottish politician and doctor
John Orr, originating from a ford (part of the Tweed River in Scotland) used by
the Abbot of Melrose Abbey.
Well known Abbotsford landmarks include Dights Falls, the Skipping Girl sign,
former Collingwood Town Hall, Abbotsford Convent and Victoria Park football ground.
Area of Abbotsford first subdivided in 1838 and sold at auction in Sydney.
One of buyers was John Dight. Land he bought then known as Dights Paddock.
Dight further subdivided and sold off 5 acre blocks. In 1878 Edwin Trenerry,
property developer bought a large portion of Dight’s Paddock. Further residential
subdivision saw the need for a recreational sports oval – named Victoria Park, in 1879.
Abbotsford quickly established as an industrial area – home to many Irish
factory workers. Like many working class inner suburbs established a reputation
for crime.
Since 1980’s a stream of migration has seen Victoria Street become Little Saigon –
Victoria’s largest Vietnamese community with a following from far and wide for its
varieties of cuisine.

One of Melbourne’s oldest suburbs notable for historic
buildings with many 19th century dwellings, shops, factories
still in use. Named in 1842 after Baron Collingwood, or
old hotel that bore his name.
Subdivision and sale of land commenced in 1838 and mostly completed
in 1850’s. Declared a municipality (large population centre)
after Melbourne and Geelong. Collingwood’s early development
of small houses, schools, shops and churches resulted directly
from the population growth from gold rush in the 1850’s and 60’s.
Housing in Collingwood includes Victorian terrace homes,
lavish warehouse conversions and high-rise public housing flats.
Smith Street is the main commercial strip with imposing Victorian
architecture. At the turn of the 18th/19th century Smith Street rivaled
Chapel Street Prahran as dominant home of suburban emporiums
and department stores. G.J. Coles first store opened in Smith Street
Collingwood in 1912.
