City Of Whitehorse
First settled by Europeans in 1841. Area was densely wooded but small farms
and orchards were developed soon after. In 1861 Travellers Rest Hotel was built
(site of current Blackburn Hotel). “Blackburn Creek” post office was opened in 1876.
Brickworks and quarries were established in the area during the land boom of the 1880’s.
Blackburn Railway Station was built in 1882.
Large part of Blackburn is of historical significance; built around the artificial
Blackburn Lake in 1889 … a popular day trip by train in the late 19th century.
Some notable Australian artists including Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin
painted in the bush in these areas.
Residential development was slow in Blackburn and most occurred post WW2
Known for its parks….
Two train stations – Blackburn and Laburnum on Belgrave and Lilydale lines.

City Of Whitehorse and City Of Manningham
Features the City Of Whitehorse’s main offices and well as large retail and
wholesale businesses along Whitehorse Road.
“Nunawading” Aboriginal derivation(?)  meaning battlefield or ceremonial ground
originally applied to large area now including Box Hill, Blackburn, Mitcham, Forest Hill and Vermont.
In the 1870’s when the area was a producer of bricks and clay it became
known as “Tunstall” after famed pottery producing town in England.
Name “Nunawading” again replaced Tunstall in 1945. Post WW2 housing boom saw houses replace orchids.
In 1968 the Civic Centre opened up as City Of Nunwading administrative centre,
later to merge with City of Box Hill in 1994.
Today, Whitehorse Road is Melbourne’s largest retail strip for bulk goods.
Large new railway station and good access to Eastern Freeway.
