Once a large independent city Oakleigh has its own Central Business District. Traditionally known to have a strong Greek influence.
Early history of Oakleigh sees it as a grazing run – Scotchman’s Creek Run, from the 1840’s. First surveyed in 1853 with land sold shortly after, the Oakleigh Post Office was opened in 1854. Opening of the Melbourne to Oakleigh Railway line in 1877 saw a boom in settlement.
Oakleigh and Dandenong were two large cities outside of Melbourne greatly contributed to by the railway line. Large industry grew with Oakleigh producing 20% of Melbourne’s bricks up until 1953. Railway works, market gardening and other industry were all major contributors to Melbourne’s rapid growth. Many large old buildings and institutions still exist between the railway line and Dandenong Road – testimony to this bustling past.
Atherton Road is Oakleigh’s historic commercial main street with Drummond Street having many older commercial buildings including banks and shops. Eaton Street is now a shopping mall connecting Atherton Road with the train station.
Cranbourne and Pakenham Line trains pass through Oakleigh with major bus lines converging at Oakleigh.
