Historically known as Sandridge bordered by Hobson’s Bay (part of Port Philip Bay) and Yarra River.
Became known as Port Melbourne in 1884. Had numerous hotels. Early industries included sugar refining, chemical works, rice and flour mills, gasworks and distillery. Station Pier and Princes Piers were major places of arrival for immigrants arriving in Australia.
For many years a focus of Melbourne’s criminal underworld – smuggling syndicates on the docks, gangsters.
Developed as Melbourne’s second port. Formerly an industrial area an intensive urban renewal program in past decades has seen it become diverse; parks, exclusive apartments, Bay Street restaurants and cafes, beach.
Home to eastern end of West Gate Bridge.
Light rail (tram) service.

Area featured a single hill surrounded by swamps and was known originally when Europeans first settled in 1840’s as Emerald Hill.
One of Melbourne’s earliest settled areas. In 1851 as gold rush came a tent city known as “Canvass Town” was established; a massive slum to tens of thousands of migrants. By 1870’s Emerald Hill became a town attracting middle class residents and stylish terrace homes and grand buildings – Town Hall built 1879/80. Became known as South Melbourne.
Since 1980’s massive gentrification, aided by development of Southbank to its north.

Known for Victorian terrace homes, cafes, boutiques long beach and historic bayside buildings.
